I think you're right about it being on purpose. They didn't seem like they knew what to do with it. Maybe they could've started off later in high school instead of their freshman year but then again, I doubt they knew the show would run as long as it did either. I remember overarching themes in s5 and specific episodes/moments but I didn't realize how much I had forgotten until I was doing canon rehash for a fic. The first half of s5 definitely stuck with me more than the second.
